How do I search for a story on
naplesnews.com?
Our search engine
is pretty basic. You put in a key word or two and get results. However, try to
use uncommon words (hint: gulf or Naples appears in seven out of 10 stories, try
not to use them). Unfortunately, you cannot search by date. If you get too many
results in a search, try putting in more words to cut down on the number of
results. Finally, use our Advanced Search link, it is best. Click here for the Advanced Search...
When are stories posted to
naplesnews.com?
The editors of naplesnews.com begin posting the
next day's print stories by 6 p.m. each night. Breaking news is posted to the
site as it happens. Please note that not all sections will not be posted
beginning at this time, but most of each day's stories are online and linked so
readers can see them by 1 a.m. the day of print publication. Go to individual
sections (like Neapolitan or Perspective). For weekly-updated sections like
Homes & Gardens or Real Estate, check the night before (like Friday evening
for Saturday's Homes & Gardens in print).
What years does your archive cover?
Our online archive goes back to March 1998. There
may be a few stories on the site from earlier (naplesnews.com made its debut in
November 1996), but not many.
Do
you ever delete stories?
No. We
leave all the stories that we post online in the same place. This way, you can
bookmark a story, link to a story, or search for this story anytime in the
future.
What is
marconews.com? What is bonitanews.com?
The Daily News strives to
be readers' key news source from Everglades City into south Lee County. Our
publications include the Naples Daily News, the Bonita Daily News, the Marco
Island Eagle and the Bonita Banner.
As a way to give readers daily-updated
content, as well as the most complete community coverage, we have three sites
designed to meet the needs of readers in our key circulation areas. marconews.com has all the daily content from
the Daily News as well as the complete current Marco Island Eagle. Stories from the weekly
Marco Islander can also be found in this section.
In the same way, readers in
Bonita Springs and south Lee County can find all their coverage at bonitanews.com from the Bonita Daily News as well as the
twice-weekly Bonita Banner. The bulk of
our local coverage can be found in naplesnews.com, as our original site has
stories "cross-posted" from all of our news coverage areas.
I saw a wire service story in the newspaper.
I can't find it on naplesnews.com.
We are asked frequently,
"Where's the Boston Globe story that's on Page 3A today?" Here's what's up: the
Daily News posts all local stories online. These are our copyrighted news
stories. However, we do not have electronic
rights to all wire stories. We do, for example, have some, but not all,
of the New York Times News Service. So, you will not see Boston Globe or Houston
Chronicle stories on our site (you will in print) and you will not see all
columnists (like Cal Thomas), but you will see some online that you will not see
in print (like Molly Ivins and Bill O'Reilly). Finally, we do not have the
resources to post online all of the Associated Press stories from our print
edition. We have a link to the AP from our home page so readers can go there to
find the majority of AP stories.
What's the best way to find a story on naplesnews.com?
Just as in print, think by section. All local
news is in Local, features in Neapolitan, etc. From a regional standpoint, think
of Naples, Marco Island and Bonita Springs. If the news happens in Naples, check
naplesnews.com; in Bonita, check bonitanews.com; and on Marco, check marconews.com. Our regional publications
(the Marco Island Eagle and the Bonita Banner) are part of the Bonita and
Marco sites. So, if you hear about a crash on Marco or an acid spill in Bonita,
check those sites for the regional news.
It looks like naplesnews.com hasn't been updated in several
days. What's up?
Our site is
updated daily. However, a computer can display an older page (this appears to
happen most frequently with readers using AOL). If you think you are not seeing
the most current page, click "refresh" or "reload" in your browser.
What is the seven-day archive? How does it
work?
Our 7-day archive (a link
can be found to the right of the main news photograph on each of the section
fronts ... Sports, Local news, Neapolitan, etc.). This is a quick way to check
for each section's stories during the past seven days. You will get a list of
all headlines (in alphabetical order) that you can scroll through to either see
what news happened that day or to find a specific story.
I can't find the Editorial section from the
newspaper on naplesnews.com. What is the Perspective section?
A couple of years ago, we faced a dilemma. Some
readers couldn't find our Sunday Perspective features. So, we began to call the
Daily News' online editorial page "Perspective." We did this because each day's
Editorial Page online contains additional guest commentaries, columnists (like
Bill O'Reilly and Molly Ivins) and gives more "perspective" to the day's events
than our print editorial and op-ed pages. Readers should easily find each day's
letters to the editor, the Letter of the Day and our editorials in Perspective daily.
How do I submit an
engagement/wedding/anniversary?
Readers wishing to submit wedding, anniversary or engagement
announcements can do so via e-mail or forms available online. Here are the forms
available:
Wedding | Anniversary | Engagement
Photo
re-print | Legal | New
business
Your browser will need
to have the Adobe PDF plug-in. Get Adobe
plug-in.
How do I bookmark
a page?
You can easily bookmark
the story you are reading by using the "Favorites" or "Bookmarks" function in
your Internet browser.
How can I e-mail the author of a
story?
Our writers welcome your
feedback, comments and suggestions for future stories. For Naples Daily News
staff writers, you can simply click on the e-mail address next to the writer's
name to e-mail. Unfortunately, we do not have e-mail addresses available for
many outside writers from our wire services, syndicates and other publications.
You can usually find this information by accessing the source publication
online.
How can I access other
stories and sections?
A
pull-down menu listing our other sections can be found at the bottom of the
page. Below that is a list of other stories from this section. You can also use
any of the links in the blue navigation bar near the top of your browser
window.
Where can I find coverage
of local prep sports?
Local prep sports coverage is found in our PrepZone section.
How do I write a letter to the editor?
The Naples Daily News welcomes letters of up to
250 words. We reserve the right to reject letters or edit for clarity, brevity,
good taste and accuracy, and to prevent libel. No poetry, attacks on private
individuals, or letter-writing campaigns, please. Writers should limit
submissions to one letter every two weeks. Include a phone number and make
certain you have signed your letter. Get complete letter-writing
guidelines.
How do I find the phone number/e-mail of a reporter?
Readers can find the e-mail address
and telephone number of many staffers in our Departmental
Directory.
Where can I find stories from
Showcase?
Stories
from our weekly Showcase tabloid section are available in the Showcase section online. Our online coverage is divided, with one section for local
events called Happenings and another for Entertainment, which covers movies, music and
television. Readers can also find local movie
listings in this section.
Where can I find
the crossword/word search?

Where can I find Brent Batten
columns?
Brent
Batten's columns are published on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Columns
always appear in our local news section. If you've missed a column,
use our seven-day
archive to find columns for the past week. Brent's
columns always appear with the words "Brent Batten" in the
headline.
Where can I find Doris Reynolds columns?
Doris Reynolds' "Let's Talk Food" column appears
online and in print in Wednesday's Neapolitan
section. If you've missed a column, use our seven-day
archive to find last week's column.
Where can I find
obituaries?
Paid death notices are not editorial content and are found in our Classified section. Death
notices are searchable by name or other keyword. A list of local deaths runs in
our local news section but is not the same as obituaries.
Where can I find
horoscopes?
Daily
horoscopes are available free to our readers. Use either
the drop-down menus or the navigation links in the cream bar on the left-hand
side of all section front pages.
Where can I find lottery
numbers?
Lottery results from around the
country are available on our site.
Can I copy a story and put it on my website?
No. All stories, articles, photos and illustrations on
naplesnews.com are copyrighted material. We cannot allow, and it is against the
law for the material to appear on any site other than our own. Instead, we
encourage you to link to the page on our site. For more information, see our user
agreement.
I still have
questions.
E-mail us at info@naplesnews.com, and we will be happy
to address any additional questions or concerns you may have.
